​​Safe Obstetric Systems was launched in 2006
to develop Fetal Pillow®.

The device was released to the market in May 2011 and is now being used in more than 20 countries worldwide.

It is designed to support with management of a deeply impacted fetal head at cesarean section.

In the UK more than 85 hospitals are now using Fetal Pillow® and adoption continues to grow.

We have direct sales in Australia and New Zealand through Safe Obstetric Systems Australia and in North America through Safe Obstetric Systems Inc.

Safety of childbirth has improved over the years but there are many unresolved problems.

We at Safe Obstetric Systems aim to design and develop simple but innovative products for use in emergency obstetrics to reduce risks associated with childbirth. There are a number of additional products in our development pipeline.

Over 28,000 devices have now been used worldwide.

Dr Rajiv Varma MB, FRCOG

Founder and CEO

In my experience in the field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of 38 years, I had noticed a growing problem of fetal and maternal trauma during second stage Cesarean Sections with no real solution. This inspired me to invent Fetal Pillow.

Having a baby should be a positive experience for mother and family, no one should have to deal with the consequences of serious preventable complications. With this in mind I launched Safe Obstetric Systems, a company that is solely concerned with improving obstetric outcomes for mothers and babies.

Fetal Pillow® is our first product and it took many years of design, development, mechanical and clinical testing before it could be used in real clinical settings. Strong clinical research evidence increasingly supports the routine use of Fetal Pillow® in all second stage CS and possibly more. Over 28,000 second stage CS have been done worldwide using Fetal Pillow.

The satisfaction of hearing positive feedback from all clinicians who have used the device drives me to develop other products to improve safety of childbirth. I estimate that the use of Fetal Pillow® has already prevented many babies from serious trauma and death and significantly more maternal complications around the world.

​Fetal Pillow is fast becoming routine practice when a CS is performed in second stage. I continue to be in active clinical practice that has given me so much pleasure over the years. The main focus of my practice now is Uro-gynaecology dealing with long-term maternal consequences of childbirth.

Innes Taylor

Director, Sales and Marketing

As Company Director, Innes is responsible for all Commercial and Operational functions at Safe Obstetric Systems.  Innes leads the Sales department within the UK, manages the relationship with our global distributor network, and oversees all operational activities associated with the running of the business.

Having joined Johnson & Johnson Medical Limited as a Graduate in 2004, Innes advanced his career, securing positions of increasing responsibility within the Sales, Marketing and Commercial functions.  During this period, Innes also undertook a Master in Heath Economics and Health Policy where he harnessed his skills in market development and bringing both the sales mindset and health economic tools to deliver market access across a portfolio of new and existing products. During this period Innes was a member of the UK Health Economics Leadership Team and ETHICON division Executive Board responsible for creating and executing on key health economic and reimbursement strategic goals.

Innes had harnessed these skills in healthcare to commercialise the Fetal Pillow® throughout Europe, Australia & New Zealand, Canada, and Middle East and prepared the launch strategy for US market entry.

​Women’s health has been integral to Innes’s career and he is passionate about advancing health technology solutions to enhance and enrich womens’ lives. He believes there is no better place to start than at childbirth, the most important part of every family’s life.

​Nish Varma ACA

Director, Sales, CFO

As Company Director and CFO, Nish is responsible for various functions across the business globally. His current strategic focus centres on expansion into the US market following FDA approval, through driving sales, prospecting new accounts, and managing existing relationships with both customers and distribution partners. He has been responsible for direct sales in the New York area, having built a strong foundation of new accounts with major hospital systems in the territory. In addition, Nish provides a pivotal role in managing Accounting and Operational functions across the global business.

Having joined Safe Obstetric Systems in January 2016, Nish brings with him a wealth of experience, after graduating with a first-class degree in Economics in 2006. He has spent three years at PricewaterhouseCoopers in their Assurance and Business Advisory department, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 2009. Since then he has worked at Barclays Investment Bank, most recently in their Equity Research department performing company valuations, financial analysis and publishing research on listed companies within the Business Services sector, as well as marketing investment ideas to clients (primarily fund managers).

​His financial and commercial experience provide a strong foundation for strategic analysis and development of key global growth initiatives at Safe Obstetric Systems.

Peter Dawes

Director Sales, Australia & New Zealand

Peter’s responsibilities are focused toward Sales Development and Operational functions throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Peter joined Safe Obstetrics in November 2015 after initially developing the Australian business under a prior medical distributor. Academic history includes Associate Diploma Business and Marketing in 2000 Gold Coast Queensland. The past 20 years, Peter has managed national sales teams, directed the development of new business opportunities and assisted in major national marketing initiatives.

​An earlier background in semi-professional team sports as a player and coach provided a valuable grounding for working in team environments and planning strategies to succeed.

Tenille Samuelson

​Sales Executive, Australia

Tenille is responsible for managing and developing Sales within South East Queensland and Northern NSW Districts. In addition supporting the Australian and New Zealand business in Communications and Marketing.

​Tenille has achieved a Bachelor of Business in Communications and Marketing and is also a qualified Yoga and Pilates Instructor. Over the past 10 years Tenille has operated her own Pilates and Wellness studio with a passion for women’s health. Providing guidance to many women through fertility, pregnancy (pre and post-natal) and supporting women after traumatic birth experiences. Due to a desire to do more for women in birth, Tenille joined the SOS Team in 2018.
